OpenAI simply made its largest acquisition but, scooping up Jony Ive and Sam Altman’s secretive gadget startup, io, in a $6.5 billion all-equity deal. Ive, the legendary designer behind the iPhone and different iconic Apple merchandise, will now lead artistic and design work at OpenAI by way of his agency LoveFrom. The aim? To take AI “past the display” and construct a brand new era of AI-powered client units.
Past the tech, there’s a transparent narrative play right here. OpenAI is framing Altman because the Jobs-esque visionary and Ive because the design genius who makes all of it actual. Social media had a discipline day with the staged buddy pictures of the duo, however the messaging is difficult to overlook: Take the iPhone launch, and make it AI.
